Wiring Guide with Diagrams to Interface with Arduino and A4988 Motor Driver

Wiring Guide
1. Power Supply
- A4988 VDD → Arduino 5V
- A4988 GND → Arduino GND
- A4988 VMOT → External Power Supply (+12V or +9V)
- A4988 GND (next to VMOT) → Power Supply Ground
2. Control Pins (Arduino → A4988)
- STEP → Arduino Digital Pin 3
- DIR → Arduino Digital Pin 2
- ENABLE (optional) → Arduino Digital Pin 8 (can be left unconnected for always enabled)
3. Motor Coil Connections
The NEMA17 motor has 4 wires (two coils):
| Motor Wire | A4988 Pin | Description |
|---|---|---|
| Coil A1 | 1A | First end of Coil A |
| Coil A2 | 1B | Second end of Coil A |
| Coil B1 | 2A | First end of Coil B |
| Coil B2 | 2B | Second end of Coil B |
4. Capacitor
Place a 100 µF capacitor across VMOT and GND near the driver to prevent voltage spikes.
5. Adjusting Current Limit
Use the small potentiometer on the A4988 module to set the current limit for your stepper motor to avoid overheating.
